Dropshipping Strategies for 2021 (Part 1) - How to Utilise Customisation to Boost Your Sales!

Updated: Jul 6, 2021

So you’ve probably seen videos of students earning 6 figures from their bedrooms through dropshipping. Watching these videos, dropshipping sounds like the dream – low costs and seemingly high returns. Or is it? This may be the case in the past but the traditional dropshipping strategies may not grow your business in 2021. In this series, we’ll be talking about strategies which you can adopt in 2021 to keep growing your dropshipping business.

We’re not saying that dropshipping is dead. However, expecting your business to profit in 2021 with just cheap, generic products won’t cut it. Post COVID-19 saw the increase in customers shopping online. At the same time, you need to remember that there is a substantial number of people who turned to dropshipping as a means of income. Why? Covid-19 had economic impacts which resulted in employees being laid off globally. In the same breath that you are realising the potential for your dropshipping business to grow, you should also realise that the market has gotten more saturated. For your e-commerce store to stay competitive, strengthening your branding is essential in 2021 and on.

Imagine if you were to wear a grey t-shirt and walk right into a group of people wearing the same grey t-shirts. What will help you stand out from the crowd then? A different haircut which stands out from the group will definitely help to express your unique identity. Likewise, customisation of your products with the help of a proper dropshipping agent and proper marketing campaigns will help solidify your brand’s identity. There are different levels of customisation which you may consider depending on your budget.

1. Customisation of product packaging

customised packaging
Customising your products' packaging is one of the simplest and cost-efficient methods of adding a personal touch to your dropshipping product!

When products are ordered from AliExpress, they usually come in brown or black packages with Chinese labels. If your budget is not large, you may consider customising your product packaging according to your brand image. When the customers are exposed to a color scheme consistent with what they see on your ads and store, this helps to cement your brand identity in their minds.

2. Customisation of inserts and user manuals

There are 2 main uses for the customisation of inserts. As mentioned in one of our earlier articles, some suppliers have a tendency of inserting their own promotion materials in your packages. When you work with a dropshipping agent you can avoid this! Additionally, you can also customise inserts in your packages. Some of our clients utilise this to express thanks for their clients’ support.

For some products, you may even consider translating the user manuals from Chinese to English and print it out at a small cost. This mitigates the difficulty in learning how to use a new product for your clients. However, if your budget doesn’t allow, there are other ways to improving your store’s customer experience.

3. Labelling products with your own brand logo

Customised labelling of products
Increase the exclusivity of your products by adding your brand name/logo.

When your store has reached a substantial minimum order quantity daily (500 and above), you may want to consider labelling products with your own brand logo. When your store has reached this size of customer base, it shows that your e-commerce business has enough demand to cater to your own exclusive products. Labelling products with your own brand logo essentially increases the customers’ perception of your products’ value and your store’s stickiness. In the long term, these factors build customer loyalty to your brand. The slight increase in production costs would be outweighed by the larger increase in revenue customer loyalty brings.

4. Customisation of product hardware

When people hear of ‘dropshipping products’ or ‘made in China’, there is still a certain stigma of lower quality products stuck to them. However, to generalise Chinese made products as lesser products because of a few bad eggs would be inaccurate. When your store has acquired enough MOQ (minimum order quantity) every day, this is an option you may want to consider.

A credible dropshipping agent usually works closely with different factories and suppliers. They are usually able to communicate with you in your language and Chinese to communicate your ideas clearly to the suppliers. For example, if you are selling lights and your clients’ reviews reflected that the lighting is not as strong as they would have wanted it to be, you can change the bulbs in the lights you are selling via this method! That way, your clients would know that their views were noted and acted upon. Of course, this is the most expensive level of customisation but if you can afford to make your customers smile harder, why not? Besides, improving the product quality is the most straightforward way of improving your store’s stickiness and building consumer trust to refer their contacts to purchasing your products.
